From Title to Brand: Building a Personal Brand That Commands Premium Fees

Your corporate title gave you authority inside an organization. Your personal brand gives you authority in the market. Here is how to make the shift — and why it matters more than most executives realize.

Inside a corporation, your title does the positioning work for you. "Chief Financial Officer" or "VP of Operations" communicates authority, scope, and expertise without requiring any further explanation. The moment you leave that organization, the title loses most of its power — and you have to build something to replace it.

That something is a personal brand. And for most executives, building one from scratch is an unfamiliar and uncomfortable exercise.

A personal brand is not a LinkedIn profile or a website. It is the answer to a specific question: when someone in your target market has the problem you solve, do they think of you? If the answer is no — or if you are not sure — you do not yet have a brand. You have a resume.

The shift from title to brand requires three things: clarity about who you serve and what problem you solve, a consistent presence in the channels where your target clients spend their time, and a body of work that demonstrates your expertise in a tangible, accessible way.

For most executives, the fastest path to brand authority is thought leadership — sharing the frameworks, perspectives, and hard-won insights that come from decades of experience. This does not require a podcast or a book. It requires a point of view, expressed consistently, in the places your clients are looking.

The executives who invest in personal brand development before they need clients — before they leave corporate, or in the early months of their transition — build practices that grow through referral and reputation rather than cold outreach. The brand does the selling. The executive does the work.
